Multiple Sclerosis is actually an autoimmune disease that primarily affects the central nervous system (the brain and the spinal cord). Due to triggers that are yet unknown, the immune system of the body (which is responsible for fighting off illnesses) begins to turn on the body itself. The body’s myelin sheath - which is actually the covering of the nerve cells – is attacked. Because of this anomaly, demylelination occurs. This refers to the inflammation and gradual breaking down of the myelin sheaths. Since healthy myelin sheaths are necessary for the efficient transmission of messages from the brain to the body, the MS patient's movement and reception of sensations are greatly affected, limiting normalcy of life.
Even though a cure to MS is yet to be found, there are available therapy programs and medications that can help patients resume a somewhat normal life and to slow down the progress of the disease. Institutions like the National MS Foundation seek to fund the developments of these programs and medications and to raise more awareness about MS.
