When my brother Brian was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis 20 years ago, my first reaction was anger. It felt like an unfair blow, random and uncaring. Bitterly, I thought, “Why him? Why not those people who voluntarily throw their lives away. My brother had always taken care of his health, and he was the best brother, husband, father and friend anybody could ask for.
He always had a smile on his face and can be counted on to have something funny and inspiring to say even in the toughest times. When a person develops a serious life-altering disease like MS, his entire family's life is changed forever. We painfully resigned ourselves to the reality that my brother, who was so vibrant and full of life, would eventually be confined to a wheelchair like a paraplegic. Friends and other loved ones shook their heads in sympathy. Strangely, it was Brian who seemed to handle the diagnosis better. Until now, 20 years later, my brother still manages to have a sense of humour and amazing strength about the whole ordeal. For him, MS can only ravage his body but it will never touch his spirit.
