Weight Loss and our DNA

Our hunter-gathering ancestors didn't have it so easy; their only meals came from the animals they killed and the plants they found or cultivated themselves. For them, starvation was more of a risk than obesity.Over time, the human body evolved to store food as fat for the future.

You inherited that same programming in your DNA. It is called your metabolism:
It's the series of chemical reactions that control your weight. When those reactions are out of balance, you'll gain weight - even when you think you're doing everything right to lose it. Have you ever really looked at what you put in your mouth?

If your like most consumers, your hunting and gathering probably involves foraging in your fridge or picking out packages at the supermarket. Now, take a closer look at the labels on those packages: You'll see many words you probably can't define or even pronounce. These aren't foods found in nature. I can guarantee that your ancestors never hunted for "hydrogenated" anything. They probably wouldn't recognize most of the food you eat.

Here's the news flash: Your DNA doesn't recognize these foods either. Frankly, it doesn't know how to process them.

Healthy food choices

There are actually a lot of food items that can help you satisfy your hunger, get you energized and nourished without wreaking havoc on your weight loss program.

• Whole grains – snacks made of whole grain are rich in fiber and complex carbohydrates. These can give you the energy that you need to get through the day. Go for low-fat whole-grain crackers, pretzels or cripsbreads and make sure to have some available in your work area so you can easily grab a bite when you feel hungry.
• Fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables make you feel full without the fat intake. They are generally low-calorie choices so you don't have to worry about your weight.
• Nuts. If you tend to feel sleepy at work, nuts and seeds can give you the extra energy to get through the day. They are rich in protein so they tend to make you feel full for a longer period.

So the next time you feel the urge to snack, you can stop feeling guilty about it and satisfy your hunger with these food items.

Snacking for Weight Loss

Long gone are the days when snacks were considered bad food. You can satisfy that mid-morning hunger without throwing away your weight loss program. All you need to do is opt for healthier snack options instead of the usual sweet candy bars or even those energy bars that have more sugar than other nutrients in them.

Here are some of the best snack choices that will fit into your weight loss plan.

Whole grain snacks – they are rich in complex carbohydrates and fiber, which replenishes your energy supply and allows you to get through the day more efficiently. Stock up on low-fat whole-grain crackers, crispbreads or pretzels.
Fruits – take your whole-grain crackers with fruits for a more filling mid-morning snack. This should be more than enough to tide you over until lunch. Fruits and vegetables are rich in vitamins, minerals and fiber, plus they provide you with the feeling of fullness without the calories.

Nuts and seeds – If you have been feeling sluggish at work, munch on nuts and seeds to get your brain working again. These food items make you feel fuller for a longer period. While they do contain a lot of fat, it's mostly monounsaturated so it's still good for your body. Take note, however, that nuts are high in calories so eat them in moderation.

Low-fat dairy – grab yogurt or slather cheese onto your crackers and you have a filling snack without the weight gain. Low-fat dairy products are rich in calcium and protein so they can efficiently fill up your power stores.

Again, the idea is to make sure that you eat these items in moderation. Just take in enough for you to satisfy your hunger. It's also best if you stock up on easy-to-prepare snacks in your fridge so you don't find yourself making a beeline towards the vending machine at work. Here are more ideas for no-fuss snacks.

Toast half of a whole-wheat English muffin and top it with a slice of tomato, low-fat American cheese and a slice of bacon. Then pop the whole thing into the microwave and bake until the cheese melts.

Slather mashed banana and peanut butter on a whole-grain bagel. You can also opt for part-skim ricotta cheese, a thinly sliced apple and cinnamon for variety.

Healthier Snack Options to Fit Your Weight Loss Program

It's hours before your lunch and your stomach is growling already. You feel like reaching for the cookie jar or making your way to the vending machine outside your office but you know that you should lay off the treats while you're trying to lose weight. At some point, you wouldn't be able to resist the temptation so you head out and grab a bit anyway. Afterwards, you feel so guilty about that mid-morning snack.

Snacking has always been seen in the bad light as far as weight loss is concerned. But truth be told, snacks doesn't have to be all that bad. It's perfectly fine to take a lot of mini-meals during the day to manage your hunger and avoid going on a binge. They can also give you proper nourishment especially when your days are full with work and you have a really busy schedule ahead of you.

Your brain needs glucose.....

On a starved state, the body tends to go on a hunt for stored fuel to keep your energy level up. Your brain needs glucose for it to regulate various processes. If you don't eat, your brain doesn't get its regular supply so it goes searching for fuel in your system and will resort to either using your stored carbohydrates or converting your fat stores into glucose. By the time lunch comes, you're so starved that your brain sends off the warning signals to refuel as much as you can stuff into your system. Because of this, you have a higher tendency to take in large portions of food and go on a binge to compensate for the lost energy. It is that or you strengthen the impulse to reach for a mid-morning snack – which mostly consists of high-fat sweets, which can wreak havoc on your weight loss program.

Lose Weight By Eating Your Breakfast

Weight-watchers, be warned. Skipping meals to lose weight is bound to backfire on you. When you don't eat breakfast, you are more prone to overeating and this translates to taking in more calories than you really need. Take note that it has been at least eight hours since your last meal. On the average, an individual will grow hungry every four hours. Even while you're asleep, you're using energy, which means your body is already in a starved state by morning. If you don't eat anything to start your day and opt to get lunch instead, you're practically forcing your body to run on empty. That's more than sixteen hours of food deprivation.

Understanding MS

Multiple Sclerosis is actually an autoimmune disease that primarily affects the central nervous system (the brain and the spinal cord). Due to triggers that are yet unknown, the immune system of the body (which is responsible for fighting off illnesses) begins to turn on the body itself. The body’s myelin sheath - which is actually the covering of the nerve cells – is attacked. Because of this anomaly, demylelination occurs. This refers to the inflammation and gradual breaking down of the myelin sheaths. Since healthy myelin sheaths are necessary for the efficient transmission of messages from the brain to the body, the MS patient's movement and reception of sensations are greatly affected, limiting normalcy of life.

Even though a cure to MS is yet to be found, there are available therapy programs and medications that can help patients resume a somewhat normal life and to slow down the progress of the disease. Institutions like the National MS Foundation seek to fund the developments of these programs and medications and to raise more awareness about MS.

My personal story

When my brother Brian was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis 20 years ago, my first reaction was anger. It felt like an unfair blow, random and uncaring. Bitterly, I thought, “Why him? Why not those people who voluntarily throw their lives away. My brother had always taken care of his health, and he was the best brother, husband, father and friend anybody could ask for.

He always had a smile on his face and can be counted on to have something funny and inspiring to say even in the toughest times. When a person develops a serious life-altering disease like MS, his entire family's life is changed forever. We painfully resigned ourselves to the reality that my brother, who was so vibrant and full of life, would eventually be confined to a wheelchair like a paraplegic. Friends and other loved ones shook their heads in sympathy. Strangely, it was Brian who seemed to handle the diagnosis better. Until now, 20 years later, my brother still manages to have a sense of humour and amazing strength about the whole ordeal. For him, MS can only ravage his body but it will never touch his spirit.
